Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi spoke on the Kanwar Yatra nameplate issue

Even before the start of the Kanwar Yatra this year, the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh has issued an order. The order states that the owners of all shops, hotels and dhabas on the Kanwar route will have to put their name plates outside. Now a statement of the Union Minister has come out on this. He said that there is ‘nothing wrong’ in the controversial directive issued by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, in which eateries and fruit vendors on the Kanwar Yatra route have been asked to display the names of the owners.

The Union minister’s support for the order comes a day after BJP allies such as RLD, JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas) opposed it; opposition parties have also criticised the order and demanded that the Uttar Pradesh BJP government withdraw it.

‘The instructions should not be seen through religious prism’

The former Bihar chief minister said, “I cannot speak for other parties, but I don’t find anything wrong in such an order. If business people are asked to display their name and address prominently, what is wrong in it?” Hindustani Awam Morcha chief Manjhi further said that this directive should not be seen from a ‘religious perspective’.

“In fact, such displays make it easier for buyers to identify a particular stall. It is wrong to view this event through the prism of religion,” the Union minister said.

What did Union Minister Chirag Paswan say?

Meanwhile, Union Minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan opposed the directive. He protested saying “Casteism and communalism have harmed the country more than anything else.” KC Tyagi, senior spokesperson of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), remarked that the order is against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.

Meanwhile, the opposition has accused the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government of trying to ‘drive Muslim fruit vendors out of business during the pilgrimage season’.
