Tokyo, Sep 3 (IANS)| India’s para shooter Avani Lekhara won a bronze medal in the women’s 50m rifle three position SH1 event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics here. This is Avani’s second medal in this Paralympics. Earlier, she won the gold medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 category with a score of 249.6. With Avni winning the medal, India has so far won 12 medals in Tokyo.

Avani finished third with a score of 445.9. The gold medal in this event was won by Kulping Zhang of China with a score of 457.9, while Germany’s Natascha Hiltrop took the silver with a score of 457.1. India has won the second medal of the day. Prior to Avani, Praveen Kumar won the country a silver medal in the men’s high jump T64 event. With this, Avani has become the first woman and second Indian para athlete to win more than one medal in a Paralympic. Before him, Jogind Singh Bedi had won more than one medal in a Paralympic.

At the 1984 Paralympics at Stoke Mandeville, Bedi won silver in shot put L6 and bronze in javelin throw F46 and discus throw L6 events. Avni will now be seen competing in the Mixed 50m Rifle Prone SH1 event on Sunday. India has so far won a total of 12 medals including two gold, six silver and four bronze at the Tokyo Paralympics.
