Chennai. Huge crowds were witnessed at Metro railway stations in Chennai as state-run Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses went off the road due to an all-India strike called by joint trade unions. Koyambedu station was especially full of long queues for tickets.
When contacted, Southern Railway officials said that there has been an unprecedented increase in the number of passengers at all metro stations in Chennai.
Koyambedu, Triplicane, Nungambakkam and all major stations are overcrowded as buses are not plying. There is heavy traffic jam in all these areas.
According to an official, more than 55,000 passengers were on board at Nungambakkam station from 5 am to 12 noon on Monday. The exact number of passengers using the train services would be known from the station by evening, he added.
Notably, due to the strike against the privatization policies of the Central Government, around 1000 MTC buses are closed in Chennai Corporation alone.
Office goers, students and daily wage workers were stranded on the road.
