new Delhi. The Center on Tuesday approved the integration bill for the merger of the three municipal corporations of Delhi. The decision to merge these three mayors of MCD was approved in a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
According to government sources, the bill for the “Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022” is likely to be introduced in Parliament during the coming week and will unify the MCD by merging the existing three bodies.
The erstwhile MCD was bifurcated into three municipal bodies—South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) in 2011 through the Delhi Municipal Corporation Amendment Act, 1911.
However, this division of the corporation was uneven in terms of territorial divisions and the revenue generating capacity of each corporation. As a result, the resources available to the three corporations differed greatly compared to their obligations.
This gap widened over time, adding to the financial difficulties of the three municipal bodies, making them unable to pay salaries and retirement benefits to their employees on time and thus creating serious obstacles in maintaining civic services in Delhi. Born.
Earlier, the government had deferred the announcement of municipal elections, indicating the merger of these three bodies.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal termed the postponement of the MCD elections as a threat to the country’s democracy, saying this was the first time that the Center had written to the State Election Commission to postpone the polls.
He also asked the government what they were doing all these years if they wanted to merge these municipal bodies into one.
He also said that the government had written to the Election Commission a few hours before the announcement of the poll schedule for the MCD elections.
