Guwahati. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition registered a landslide victory in the 60-seat Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections on Sunday. The saffron party won 58 seats, while one seat each went in favor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
According to the preliminary results announced by the Assam State Election Commission, the BJP (52 wards) and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (six wards) won 58 wards. Three were earlier elected unopposed by candidates of the saffron party.
AAP candidate Masoom Begum won ward no 42, while AJP candidate Hukum Chand Ali defeated BJP candidate to win ward no one.
The main opposition Congress could not open its account this time in the GMC elections held after a gap of nine years.
A total of 197 candidates contested the elections in 57 wards.
The GMC was elected after a gap of nine years. In 2013, the Congress won the coveted GMC election, but internal strife led many elected councilors to the BJP, which helped the saffron party form a municipal board.
Apart from the ruling BJP and main opposition Congress, AAP has fielded 38 candidates.
Around 52.80 per cent of the 7,96,829 voters exercised their franchise in Friday’s polling.
Electronic voting machines were used in politically important elections.
