new Delhi. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday summoned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira to join the probe into the coal block allocation scam. The agency has asked Banerjee and his wife to join the probe on March 21-22.
Abhishek Banerjee had recorded his statement before the ED officials on September 6, 2021. He was interrogated for about six hours, but the investigating agency was not satisfied and hence summoned him again along with his wife.
In September 2021, the couple, through their counsel, had filed a petition before the Delhi High Court against the ED summons.
But his petition was rejected by the court on March 11.
The couple, in their petition, said that they reside in West Bengal and have sought relief on this ground. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, challenged his contention.
He told the court that the ED is not confined to any area under the PMLA.
CBI and ED are investigating this matter. Both the agencies are conducting parallel investigation. The CBI case was registered in November last year.
