New Delhi. Chandigarh University founder-chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu was on Tuesday nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India. The Home Ministry issued a notification saying that President Draupadi Murmu has nominated Sandhu to the Rajya Sabha. According to the notification, Sandhu, the farmer’s son, is one of the leading teachers of India. It highlights his dual role as a farmer and his struggle to gain education. He is credited with the establishment of ‘Chandigarh Group of Colleges’ (CGC) in Mohali in 2001 and the establishment of Chandigarh University in 2012. The notification also includes two non-governmental organisations, ‘Indian Minorities Foundation’ and ‘New India Development Foundation’. Sandhu’s active involvement in community efforts through the medium is also mentioned.
He is actively working towards improving health services and promoting communal harmony on a large scale. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar welcomed Sandhu’s nomination. Dhankhar expressed optimism about Sandhu’s contribution to the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing her significant work in community service and passion for education, innovation and learning. He wrote on social media platform X.. “I welcome the nomination of Shri Satnam Singh Sandhu ji for Rajya Sabha. His rich work in community service and his passion for education, innovation and learning will be a great source of strength for Rajya Sabha. I wish him all the best for his tenure.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the President nominating Sandhu to the Rajya Sabha. Modi, in a post on ‘X’, highlighted Sandhu’s role as a renowned teacher and social worker who serves people at the grassroots level in various ways. Modi praised Sandhu for his consistent efforts to advance national unity and his work with the Indian diaspora. PM Modi wished Sandhu all the best for his parliamentary journey and expressed confidence that Sandhu’s contributions and ideas will enrich the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha.
