The High Commission has denied reports that India is preparing to send troops to Sri Lanka. People angry with the government in the South Asian country have come out on the streets. In view of the gravity of the situation, a 36-hour curfew has been imposed in Sri Lanka.
The High Commission tweeted, “The High Commission strongly denies the false and baseless news circulated in a section of the media that India is sending its troops to Sri Lanka. The High Commission also condemns such irresponsible reporting and hopes that the concerned will stop spreading rumours. There were some reports that India is planning to send troops for the Gotabaya Rajapaksa-led government.
However, India has sent a consignment of 40 thousand metric tons of diesel to help the troubled Sri Lanka. The Indian Embassy in Colombo tweeted, ‘More fuel supplied to Sri Lanka from India’s side. A consignment of 40 thousand MT diesel was handed over to Hon’ble Energy Minister Gamini Lokuge on behalf of the High Commission through Indian cooperation through a line of credit of $ 500 million.
It was further informed, ‘This is the fourth consignment under the LoC. Two lakh tonnes of fuel was sent from India in the last 50 days. It is reported that curfew has started in Sri Lanka from Saturday, which will continue till Monday. Earlier too, Sri Lankans had demonstrated fiercely outside President Rajapaksa’s house. There were reports that the situation in the country is getting worse. People are very worried about power cuts.
