Jammu. Pakistan continues to carry out terrorist activities in India. After the formation of Modi government in India, surgical strike and air strike were also done to teach Pakistan a lesson, but Pakistan is still not ready to understand. Now India has created a new problem for Pakistan. India has completely blocked the water of Ravi river to Pakistan by building Shahpur Kandi Barrage in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the news of English newspaper The Times of India, Shahpur Kandi Barrage has been built on the border of Jammu-Kashmir and Punjab. With the construction of this barrage, Jammu and Kashmir will get 1150 cusecs of water from Ravi river. With this, people will be able to get irrigation water in 32000 hectare area in Kathua and Samba districts of the Union Territory.
Indus River Water Agreement was signed between India and Pakistan after independence. Under this agreement, it was decided to give water of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers to Pakistan. Whereas, India had to use the water of Ravi, Sutlej and Beas rivers. Before the construction of Shahpur Kandi Barrage, the water of Ravi also went to Pakistan via Lakhanpur Dam and the water of this river could not be used much in Jammu and Kashmir. In such a situation, India decided to build a barrage and now the water of Ravi river has been stopped from going to Pakistan. Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, Ravi river also flows in Punjab. The farmers there will also get better irrigation opportunities through this.
Shahpur Kandi Barrage, which has been built on the border of Jammu-Kashmir and Punjab, its foundation was laid in 1995. At that time there was Narasimha Rao’s central government. Due to the dispute between the governments of Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, Shahpur Kandi Barrage could not be built for a long time. Then in 2014 its proposal came before PM Narendra Modi. Modi calmed down the dispute arising between Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab and then in 2018, the construction of Shahpur Kandi Barrage started again.
