India has strongly objected to the World Health Organization’s claim that more than 47 lakh deaths occurred due to corona in the country. A report has been issued by WHO regarding the deaths due to corona, on which India has raised questions. India has said that the technique or model through which WHO has collected these data is not correct.
In its report, WHO has claimed 47 lakh deaths due to coronavirus epidemic in India between January 2020 and December 2021. These figures are almost 10 times higher than the official number. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that India’s figure accounts for one third of the world’s deaths. In this report, 1.5 crore people have been claimed to have died due to corona worldwide, while the official figures are 60 lakh. Most of the deaths occurred in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The government said that the figures released by WHO are only about 17 states. According to the Center, which are the states, it was not clarified by the WHO and on what basis the data was collected?
India objected to WHO’s claims
The Union Health Ministry said in a statement that India has consistently objected to the methodology adopted by the WHO to present higher mortality estimates based on mathematical models. It further said that the WHO has issued additional mortality estimates regardless of India’s concerns. The government has said that this data of WHO is completely out of reality and their data compilation is neither based on any statistical model nor on any scientific facts. Sources said that India can raise this issue in the World Health Assembly and other forums.
