New Delhi, July 16 (IANS)| The highly contagious Delta Covid variant has infected more than 80 per cent of people in India during the devastating second wave of the pandemic. Even after taking at least one or both doses of the corona vaccine, 80 percent of the people who got infected were victims of the delta variant. This figure has come to light in a study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
ICMR said that however, studies show that vaccination has helped in reducing hospitalization and mortality. The ICMR collected samples of 677 people who had taken one or both doses of the anti-Covid vaccines Kovishield and Covaccine, who were found infected with the corona virus. Of those whose samples were taken for the study, 604 patients had received the Covishield vaccine, 71 had received the Covaccine and two had received the Sinopharm vaccine. The samples were collected from 17 states and union territories.
ICMR said, 482 cases (71 per cent) were found to be symptomatic with one or more symptoms, while 29 per cent were asymptomatic. Of the samples, fever (69 percent) was found to be the most consistent symptom, followed by body aches, headache and nausea (56 percent), cough (45 percent), sore throat (37 percent), loss of smell and taste (22 percent). percent), diarrhea (6 percent), breathlessness (6 percent) and 1 percent were found to complain of burning and redness in the eyes.
According to the World Health Organization, the delta variant has spread to more than 111 countries. The health body expects this to be the major COVID-19 strain spreading across the world soon and causing the third wave of coronavirus. According to the health ministry, both Covaccine and Covishield are effective against the delta covid variant. Covaccine is developed and manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, while Covishield is developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University and manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune.
