Violent demonstrations took place in many cities of India after Friday prayers over the controversial statement of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Demonstrations were held in many places including Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal. In many areas, protesters pelted stones and torched vehicles. Along with this, there was a demand to arrest Nupur Sharma immediately. After which BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that today the rest of India is looking like Kashmir.
Seeing the violent protests across the country, Subramanian Swamy tweeted, “Today the rest of India looks like Kashmir. Whereas we wanted Kashmir to look like the rest of India. Does Amit Shah as Home Minister have any solution? If the situation doesn’t come under control in the next 48 hours, should Amit Shah continue as the Home Minister?” He further wrote that it will be the decision of Narendra Modi.
Social media users agreed: Many users on social media agreed with Subramanian Swamy’s point of view. A user named Harsh Shukla (@harsh_shukla_97) said, “BJP is not going to take any action as long as they keep winning elections. They have become Congress just want to win elections and do nothing for Hindus. CAA, UCC, NRC, shutting down madrassa are all in dustbin before elections, they just make fake cries.”
Another user (@Cybrotoxic) wrote, “Why are we shocked, blasphemy is used to divide this country. The government simply doesn’t know that.” Kaushik Guha (@k_guha) wrote, “Why blame Shah alone? Was it not a concerted effort of all BJP/RSS in which Nupur Sharma acted only as a face?”
In another tweet, Subramanian Swamy questioned, “How come other Brahmins of Tamil Nadu didn’t agitate against DMK urging massacre of Tamil Brahmins? Not interested in human rights activists? What about self-appointed Tamil Brahmin intellectuals like Gurumurthy? Did he go underground? Now at least he can get out.
