Global Burden of Disease claimed in Delhi on Wednesday that nearly a quarter (24.8 per cent) of the total deaths in India are due to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This risk is increasing, especially among the youth. Not only this, 80 percent of women with high blood pressure have been found to be obese, while men take more stress.
India Health Link (IHL) has conducted this study in collaboration with Heal Foundation. The figures were released in a press conference convened in the capital Delhi on Wednesday. Dr. HK Chopra, (Senior Cardiologist, Medanta, Moolchand), Dr. Satyendra Goyal, Founder, India Health Link (IHL) were present on the occasion. The study was attended by 1599 patients from RWAs and hospitals.
The study had 68 percent male and 38 percent female participants. The study showed that nearly half (48 percent) of the total population is either hypertensive or at risk. More men (37 percent) were found to be stressed than women (23 percent). But among those with high blood pressure, 80 percent of women were obese or overweight, compared to 67 percent of men.
Dr HK Chopra, said – It has come to the fore that 80 percent of women with high blood pressure are obese and overall, women were found to be at higher risk of heart related problems than men. Emphasizing on the importance of preventive check-ups for heart health, Dr. Sonia Rawat, Director, Department of Preventive Health and Welfare (Sir Ganga Ram Hospital) said – After the study of IHL, women should now undergo regular preventive check-ups.
