Bangalore. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified the probe into the murder of Bajrang Dal activist Harsha after taking over from the Karnataka Police.
Home Minister Araga Gyanendra said on Saturday that it was considered appropriate to hand over the case to the NIA after coming to know about the background of the accused and the organizations behind them.
“The state has conducted a thorough investigation and it has been found that it was aimed at inciting communal violence. Apart from this, I, as home minister, cannot tell anything about the matter,” he said.
Shivamogga SP Lakshmi Prasad said that the local police has handed over all the documents to the NIA and it is cooperating in the investigation.
Harsha was murdered by a gang in Shivamogga on February 20, sparking violence and the matter came under the national spotlight. Curfew was imposed in Shivamogga for 8 days to avoid violence.
Later, the police arrested 10 people in connection with the case and invoked the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against them. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that this case is more than murder. Hindu organizations suspect that the forces that killed Harsha wanted to send a message to the youth to stay away from Hindutva activities.
The state government has given a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victim’s family and the public has also donated a huge amount.
