Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday advocated reservation for the Maratha community. He said that the Maratha community should also get reservation, but it should be done without disturbing the quota fixed for other communities. For this, he appealed to the central government for a comprehensive change in the law.
Ajit Pawar said that the Supreme Court has fixed a maximum quota of 50 percent, but this limit needs to be removed. In fact, on Saturday, the NCP leader was speaking at a program organized in Pune on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Supreme Court had called the law unconstitutional
The NCP leader said that we all are in favor of reservation for the Maratha community. For this a commission was also formed by the state government. The Bombay High Court ruled in its favour, but was overruled by the Supreme Court. In fact, in May last year, the Supreme Court had declared the Maharashtra law giving reservation in admission and government jobs to Marathas unconstitutional. The Supreme Court in its judgment had said that the 50 per cent reservation limit set by 1992 cannot be breached.
