On this day, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who was called the God of Cricket at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, made a historic record by scoring the first double century in an international one-day match against South Africa and the name of Gwalior had reached every corner in the world of cricket, but Unfortunately, since this match with South Africa, no international match has been played in Gwalior. There has been a drought of international matches in Gwalior for 12 years. However, the good thing is that Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) is building a second cricket stadium equipped with state-of-the-art facilities at Shankarpur, Gwalior. The construction work of the new stadium is progressing at a rapid pace. According to the plan of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, if everything goes well, Gwalior may host the international match once again in 2023.
The ground for the new cricket stadium being built on 61 bighas of land in Shankarpur is completely ready. Its green grass is adding to the beauty of the stadium. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, more than Rs.1.25 billion is being spent on the construction of this stadium. In the first phase, the seating capacity of 30,000 spectators will be available. After this, it will be expanded to 50 thousand. Talking about the construction work of the stadium, so far 80-85 percent work has been completed. The building structure of the four-storey North-South Pavilion is completely erected. Similarly, the East and West Side stands have also been prepared. Now the construction work has come to the finishing stage.
There will be two stadiums in Gwalior: Gwalior will be the first city in the state, where a cricket stadium with a capacity of 50 thousand spectators is being built. After its construction, there will be two stadiums in Gwalior. So far, Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore with a capacity of 30 thousand spectators is the largest stadium in the state.
