The study found that cases of unverified and bogus allegations of blasphemy in Pakistan have increased in the past few years. Due to which there has been an increase in lynchings and such incidents. There, the laws of blasphemy are being misused not only against non-Muslims but also against Muslims because of personal hatred.
According to the report, a total of 84 people were booked under blasphemy, of which 42 were Muslims, 25 Ahmadis, seven Hindus and three Christians. This Human Rights Observer 2022 report covers not only data on blasphemy but also information on lynching cases. In this, three cases of lynching have been kept. This also includes the lynching of Sri Lankan national Priyanka Kumar in Sialkot.
The report also revealed that lawyers in Pakistan’s blasphemy cases are too afraid to defend the accused. In many cases it has also been observed that the lawyers defending the accused were also attacked. Due to which lawyers refuse to fight the cases and the accused remain in jails for years. Sometimes the cases are also fake, yet the punishment has to be served.
Not only this, the judges in the lower courts have given death sentence to the accused many times without investigation. Some time ago the lawyer of an accused was murdered in Multan, Pakistan. Earlier, a judge of the Lahore High Court was shot dead in his chamber for the acquittal of a Christian man accused of blasphemy.
