National Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar on Saturday hit out at the opposition over the arrest of Nawab Malik. He said the arrest of the minister and senior NCP leader in the Maharashtra government was politically motivated. He alleged that Malik’s name is being linked with fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim because he is a Muslim. He also vehemently rejected the opposition’s demand for Malik’s resignation. In fact, Malik was arrested by the ED on February 23 for being in touch with Dawood and his associates.
The NCP chief said that Malik and his family members are being deliberately harassed, but we will fight against it. To a query on the BJP seeking Malik’s resignation, Pawar said different standards were being adopted on Malik and Union Minister Narayan Rane.
Pawar said that I do not remember that former Congress worker Narayan Rane had to resign after his recent arrest. Prime Minister is coming to Pune tomorrow. He can give more details on this. Different criteria for Rane and different criteria for Malik shows that it is politically motivated.
Pawar also targeted Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari. The governor did not approve the names of 12 members of the Legislative Council sent to him by the Maharashtra cabinet a year ago. He said that Maharashtra has the legacy of a governor like PC Alexander. I should not talk about what the current governor is doing. The central government is doing everything it can and Maharashtra is the latest example of this.
