If the election of 2022 was going to change the politics of the country, it also raised question marks on the political career of many leaders. In Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh along with his political enemy Navjot Singh Sidhu, Akali Dal’s Sarva Sarva Sukhbir Badal and CM Channi have lost the elections. On the other hand, in Uttarakhand, along with CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, veteran Congress leader and former CM Harish Rawat has also fallen face to face.
Amarinder Singh, 79, was defeated by Ajitpal Singh Kohli, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) candidate from Patiala (Urban), by a margin of 19,873 votes. Amarinder Singh had quit the Congress last year after being removed from the post of Chief Minister and later floated his own party, Punjab Lok Congress. He contested the state assembly elections in alliance with the BJP and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led SAD (United).
Congress’ Punjab unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu had to face defeat from Amritsar East assembly seat on Thursday. Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate and new face in politics Jeevanjyot Kaur defeated Sidhu by a margin of 6,750 votes. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia came third. He also contested from the same seat. Sidhu has accepted his defeat.
Congress Chief Minister candidate Charanjit Singh Channi was trying his luck from two assembly constituencies. He was in the fray from Bhadaur in Barnala district along with Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar district. During the election, when he was asked that if he wins the election from both the seats, then which seat will he leave and from which seat the MLA will remain. He said that Chamkaur Sahib would leave the seat. He belongs to Bhadaur seat, so he will keep this seat with himself. But his hope remained unfulfilled.
Shiromani Akali Dal has suffered a major setback in Jalalabad seat. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has lost from here. Jalalabad is considered a stronghold of the Akali Dal. In the 2012 elections, Sukhbir was elected MLA from here for the first time. In the 2017 elections also, Sukhbir Singh Badal was elected MLA from here. Then he defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s CM candidate Bhagwant Mann.
On the other hand, in Uttarakhand, state working president of Congress Bhuvan Kapri gave a crushing defeat to CM Pushkar Dhami. Kapri defeated BJP Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami by 6951 votes. Out of total 91325 votes, Pushkar Singh Dhami got 40675 and Congress’s Bhuvan Kapri got 47626 votes. Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat has also lost the election from Lalkuan seat. He was the Congress CM candidate.
