A fire broke out on the 19th floor of a 61-storey residential building in south Mumbai, triggering panic among residents and killing one person, officials said on Friday. A fire broke out in the Avigna Park building on Curry Road in the afternoon, leaving a thick cloud of smoke, though residents were evacuated safely.
A panicked man was seen hanging on a ledge while coming out of the burning floor. The man was seen falling down losing his balance. According to BMC disaster control, he has been identified as 30-year-old Arun Tiwari.At least 15 fire tenders reached the spot and tried to stop the flames from spreading to higher floors, while Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar visited and supervised the rescue operations.
Most of the residents, including several senior citizens and children, managed to escape from the site of the accident, although two persons are feared trapped inside.Residents said the cause of the fire, which is believed to be a temporary short-circuit, is under investigation and all fire safety measures have been taken in the building.
