On 24 August 2015, a woman named Kavita Raina had gone to pick up her baby girl at the bus stop but Kavita never returned. When Kavita was investigated, three days later the body was found in two sacks in a part of the city. Police reached the spot and recovered the body and forensic team collected evidence.
On 27 August 2015, a man named Sanjay Raina identified the woman and it was Kavita Raina. Kavita had left for the bus stop but her body was found in several pieces in sacks. There were deep wound marks at many places on his body. According to the forensic team, the murder was committed within 36 hours. According to her husband, she had left Scooty on August 24 at around 1.30 pm.
Kavita’s husband Sanjay was an employee in the pharmaceutical company and it was he who filed the missing complaint of the wife. Sanjay wandered in the investigation for two days, after which he had identified his wife in the city hospital. After a detailed investigation, the police arrested the man Mahesh Bairagi. The then DIG had told that the woman had given the suit to Mahesh Bairagi’s wife, as Mahesh’s wife ran a boutique.
When Kavita left the house on August 24, she had reached the boutique, from where Mahesh had taken her to his house. Mahesh told Kavita that her suit was kept at home. The police had claimed at that time that Mahesh was keeping a dirty fix on Kavita during that time. After reaching home, Mahesh tried to forcefully with the woman, when the woman protested, the angry Bairagi hit the woman on the head with an iron rod.
After the woman fainted, she cut the dead bodies into pieces, stuffed them in a sack and threw them under the bridge. During the investigation, the police had recovered Kavita’s scooty, on which blood stains and marks were found. The police had told in the case that Mahesh Bairagi was a victim of psychosis. He had been caught many times in the past for making obscene films.
The police administration and the government had shown a lot of speed in this whole matter. Mahesh Bairagi was arrested after investigating dozens of angles, gathering thousands of call details and evidence. In this case, the family of the victim and the police administration were shocked when Mahesh Bairagi, arrested in the famous Kavita Raina murder case on May 18, 2018, was acquitted of all charges by the district court, giving him the benefit of doubt.
While delivering the verdict, the Sessions Court also made a strong comment on the investigation of the police in the judgment. In which it was said that there are many facts related to the case but the evidence is not convincing that the accused can be convicted. At the same time, later the Indore High Court also rejected a PIL for CBI investigation. After the acquittal of accused Mahesh Bairagi in the case, an appeal was made by the government in the High Court, which was accepted. Then this matter was pending due to Corona.
