The impact of the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine is also being seen on the Games. The final of the UEFA Champions League, club football’s biggest competition, could be snatched from Russia. The European Football Association is considering whether to move the final in St Petersburg to a different location. The title match will be played on 28 May. On the other hand, the Ukraine Football League has been postponed indefinitely.
The final decision on the venue of the final match has not been taken yet, but there is every possibility that the title match can be held in the capital of England, London. “With regard to the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final in St. Petersburg, we would like to inform you that UEFA is continuously monitoring the situation. The right decision will be made at an appropriate time,” UEFA said in a statement.
The final match can be held at Wembley Stadium in England. Last year’s Euro Cup final match was played at Wembley itself. Then Italy defeated hosts England in the title match. If the final match is played at the designated venue, St Petersburg will become the second city after the capital Moscow to host the Champions League final.
The final match was supposed to be held in St Petersburg last year itself, but due to COVID-19 it could not happen. Then the final match was played in Porto, Portugal. England’s club Chelsea defeated another English club Manchester City in the final.
