Islamabad. PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif was on Monday elected as the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s MNA boycotted the elections. 174 MPs voted in his favor. Earlier, all the members of PTI MNA had walked out of the National Assembly. The party’s candidate for the top post was Shah Mehmood Qureshi. He announced that he would resign en masse from the National Assembly.
When Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri said that his conscience did not allow him to hold the session, Ayaz Sadiq of the PML-N presided over the session.
Announcing the results, Sadiq recalled that he also presided over the session in which Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N supremo and Shahbaz’s elder brother, was elected as the prime minister.
“And today, I have the honor of presiding over the election session of Shahbaz Sharif,” he said.
He declared, “Mian Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has got 174 votes. Mian Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif has been elected as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.”
As soon as Sadiq announced the results and said that Shahbaz was the new prime minister of Pakistan, the lawmakers started raising slogans in favor of Shahbaz and Nawaz.
The Speaker asked Shahbaz to move to the Prime Minister’s seat in the House and he along with other members of the former United Opposition went to the Treasury Bench amid cheers.
Shahbaz said that this is the first time in the history of Pakistan that a no-confidence motion against a prime minister has been successful.
He said, “And good has triumphed over evil.”
Shahbaz said it is a “big day” for the entire country when an “elected” prime minister has been sent for packing in a legal and constitutional manner.
He said a fall of Rs 8 in the value of the US dollar reflects “people’s happiness”.
The newly elected Prime Minister thanked the Supreme Court for burying the principle of necessity forever.
According to Dawn, he said, “In the future, no one will be able to believe that this happened in the Pakistani Parliament.”
