Chennai. Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 16 fishermen, against whom protests have started in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. As part of this protest, 800 fishing boats did not go to sea on Thursday. The arrested fishermen were from Rameswaram and Mandapam. Yesudas S.S. from -AnyTV News. Arokayasamy, a fisherman from Rameswaram, said, “Even though the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested more than 82 fishermen from Tamil Nadu since the beginning of 2022, the central and state governments are not doing much against it. We are working for the fishermen of our state. We are not going to sea for fishing in protest against this injustice.
He said though the Center has helped the crisis-stricken Sri Lankan government by funding it, the island nation has yet to respond.
Yesudas said Sri Lankan fishermen in the deep sea are now begging Indian fishermen for raw rice and even liquor.
He said that in earlier times Sri Lankan fishermen used to be very arrogant but now they have changed due to the huge crisis facing the island nation.
The fisherman, however, has asked both the central government and the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate action on the matter and put an end to the issue.
Mathew Arumugham, a fisherman from Rameswaram, told -AnyTV News, “Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu are still bearing the brunt even when Sri Lanka was pleading with the Indian government for financial assistance. Sri Lanka does not accept these attacks and regular arrests of Indian fishermen. Can be done. We are shutting down work for the day as a token protest and will continue if inaction continues.”
With Sri Lankan authorities arresting Indian fishermen for turning the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into an issue, Rameswaram fishermen are mounting pressure on both the Center and the Tamil Nadu government to bring a permanent solution to the matter.
