For the first time in North India, a hospital has successfully transplanted both lungs of a person with the help of a special machine. This double lung transplant has been successful even after the patient is corona infected.
According to the information, 55-year-old Gyanchand, a resident of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). His lungs have been severely damaged by COVID-19. He was in a very unstable and critical condition. They were on high flux oxygen. Lung transplantation was the only option to save his life. He was examined at Max Hospital in Saket, Delhi and a heart-lung transplant team led by Dr. Rahul Chandola performed a lung transplant.
In fact, on 22 December 2021, information was received about the organ registry of brain dead donor in Ahmedabad. The patient was 44 years old and died of brain hemorrhage. After this the team went to Ahmedabad to detoxify the lungs. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the patient, proper arrangements were made by the hospital authorities and every step was taken at the right time. A green corridor was built between the Civil Hospital and the airport in Ahmedabad and then the IGI International Airport. The lungs were brought back without any obstruction, covering a distance of 950 km in 3 hours. Doctors said that the patient had come to them with a lung ailment. Where the patient already had many lung problems and the patient was having trouble breathing. He was on oxygen for almost a year and his health did not improve and there was no treatment. Then it was decided to go ahead with this transplant.
Dr Rahul Chandola, Heart and Lung Transplant Specialist, Adult CTVS and Associate Director, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, said, “It was a very complex surgery and we have done this double lung transplant in Extended ECMO Life Support for the first time in North India. Did. At present the patient has fully recovered and both the lungs are fully functioning.
