New Delhi: Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia were exempted from the trials for the Asian Games by the Indian Olympic Association. He was allowed to go to the Games without trial. Against this, a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court by junior wrestlers Avinash Panghal and Sujit Kalkal, who fought in their weight category. The court has rejected it. This has cleared the way for Vinesh and Bajrang to participate in the Asian Games.
The court refused to interfere with the exemption granted in the trials. Justice Subramaniam Prasad said, “The writ petition is dismissed” on the pleas of U-20 world champion Avinash Panghal and U-23 Asian champion Sujit Kalkal. Detailed copy of this order is awaited.

Vinesh Phogat (53 kg category) and Punia (65 kg category) were on Tuesday given direct entry to the Asian Games by the Indian Olympic Association’s ad hoc committee. Trials for other wrestlers are to be held on July 22 and 23. Panghal and Kalkal challenged this decision. In a petition filed by advocates Rishikesh Baruah and Akshay Kumar, they sought quashing of the ad-hoc committee’s decision.
