Singapore: India has called for partnership with the global shipping industry to explore new technologies and the potential of using methanol and ammonia as ship fuel. The Indian delegation is here to participate in the ‘Singapore Maritime Week’. More than 10,000 delegates from all over the world are participating in this conference.
Clean alternative to marine fuel
“We look forward to exploring collaboration for all new technologies and the potential to use methanol and ammonia as ship fuel with stakeholders in the shipping industry,” Bhushan Kumar, joint secretary in the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways, told PTI. Here’s to find out.” Methane and ammonia are considered cleaner alternatives to traditional marine fuels. Green ammonia and methanol produced from low carbon sources help reduce carbon emissions.
Work will have to be done on green fuel
Bhushan Kumar said, “We have to continue working on green fuel. Even though it may not be very commercially attractive at this stage, it has to be made commercially better.” He further said that India’s efforts towards hydrogen production will also help the industry in the energy transition. He said that hydrogen production will become a reality in India by the year 2027. India is setting up hydrogen hubs at Kandla, Paradip and Tuticorin ports. Reliance and L&T have been given land in Kandla to set up a hydrogen centre. (Language)
