UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar says that students have doubts about the status of any university then they have to check on the website of UGC. The UGC publishes a list of both bogus universities and institutions recognized by the UGC. He appealed to the students not to fall prey to fake universities. From time to time, letters are also written to the state governments to take action against such universities and close them down. A new list will be released once again. Along with this, the state governments will also be written that action should be taken against the educational institutions running against the rules and they should be closed.

The UGC has issued a public notice on March 28 saying that the Open International University for Alternative Medicines and the National Board of Alternative Medicines are running various degree courses and programmes. Both these institutes are running courses against the UGC Act 1956 and students have been appealed not to take admission in these institutes.
UGC writes to all those states where fake universities are running. States have to take legal action against such fake universities and get the universities shut down. When the states are informed about the closure of a fake university, then the name of that university is removed from the list. In the last few years, the names of many universities have been removed from the list, while many fake universities have also been included in the list.
