Kiev has been an important supplier of cooking oil. About 74 per cent of sunflower oil in India last year came from Ukraine. These professionals are associated with the fields of pharmaceuticals, IT, engineering, medical and education. About 20 thousand Indian students are studying in Ukrainian universities, especially medicine. Some are also pursuing engineering education. MBBS degree obtained from Ukraine is valid all over India.
Every year a large number of students go to Ukraine to study medicine. Due to the cheap medical education here, it is a favorite place for Indian students. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there is a lot of interest among the people about Indian culture in Ukraine. The people there like Indian dance, yoga, philosophy, Ayurveda and spirituality. There are more than 30 Ukrainian cultural associations/groups across the country working to promote Indian culture and arts, especially Indian dances. The members of most of the groups have learned Indian dances at their own level.
The Indian Embassy organized a ‘Festival of India’ event in Kiev in 2017. Through which the richness and diversity of Indian culture was displayed. Music, dance and arts of India were also showcased. In 2019, the Indian dance festival called ‘Rhythm of Joy’ saw more than 300 Ukrainian artists from all over the country participating and performing Indian dances. The Embassy of India in collaboration with Kiev has set up the Indian Community Welfare Fund here. The Indian diaspora has formed the ‘India Club’ here in 2001 in which the Indian diaspora is actively involved and organizes Indian festivals like Holi, Diwali, cricket tournaments, dance festivals and screenings of Bollywood films, etc.
International Yoga Day is also celebrated
International Day of Yoga is widely celebrated throughout Ukraine. In 2018 and 2019, International Yoga Day celebrations organized by the Embassy of India were celebrated in 22 cities of Ukraine in which more than 10 thousand people participated.
Some Indian films have also been shot in Ukraine, such as ‘Winner’ which was shot in Kiev in November-December 2016. Experts from a Ukrainian studio were involved in creating the visual effects of the popular film ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ in India.
