New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday responded to the recent comments of a senior United Nations official on elections in India. Rejecting the comment, he said that there is no need for the global body to tell that elections in the country should be ‘free and fair’.
The External Affairs Minister made this comment in response to a question related to the statement of a United Nations spokesperson, in which the spokesperson had said that he is ‘hopeful’ that the ‘political and civil rights’ of the people in India will be protected and everyone will be ‘free and Will be able to vote in a ‘fair’ environment.

Jaishankar, who was here to campaign for his cabinet colleague and BJP candidate Rajiv Chandrashekhar in the Lok Sabha elections, said the UN official had commented on the Indian elections in response to a ‘heavy duty question’ during a press conference last week.
Jaishankar told reporters, ‘The United Nations does not need to tell us that our elections should be free and fair. The people of India are with me. The people of India will ensure that the elections are free and fair. So, don’t worry about it.
