This may sound like the story of an OTT show based on a Hindi speaking state, but all these incidents are absolutely true. This entire incident happened in the year 2008, when the then Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath was allegedly attacked by Mukhtar Ansari’s gang. Yogi Adityanath had a narrow escape in that attack.
IPS officer airdropped
After the death of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, memories of many such episodes are becoming fresh. Retired IPS officer Brijlal, while talking to AnyTV, narrated the complete details of the attack on Adityanath’s convoy in Azamgarh on September 7, 2008. Brijlal was then holding the post of ADG Law and Order in UP. This 1977 batch officer told that he had to be airdropped from a helicopter with an AK-47 rifle. Yogi Adityanath somehow narrowly escaped in this attack, but one person died and six others were injured.

According to Brij Lal, this story of enmity starts from 2005, when communal riots broke out in Mau. He said, ‘During this period, the name of five-time MLA and mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar had come up for instigating riots in Mau. He was seen waving AK-47 from the open jeep.
Yogi Adityanath, who was the MP from Gorakhpur at that time, himself left for Mau, but was not allowed to enter the district. He was stopped at Dohrighat and sent back to Gorakhpur. Then Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh Yadav was the Chief Minister.
Changing car at the last moment saved life!
In the year 2008, Yogi Adityanath had challenged Mukhtar Ansari and said that he would provide justice to the victims of Mau riots. Brij Lal told AnyTV, ‘Yogi ji had announced a rally against terrorism in Azamgarh under the leadership of Hindu Yuva Vahini. The date of the rally was September 7, 2008 and DAV College grounds were chosen as the rally venue.

It is believed that Yogi Adityanath was traveling in a red SUV, which was part of a convoy of 40 vehicles. Just before this convoy reached Azamgarh, stones were pelted at it, after which petrol bombs were thrown and firing started. Brij Lal said, Yogi Adityanath’s gunner also opened fire. The former IPS officer said, ‘It was just a coincidence that he changed the vehicle at the last moment and left his red SUV, which saved his life. This was a planned attack.
March in the streets of Azamgarh with AK-47
Brij Lal recalled that as soon as he came to know about the attack, he took a helicopter to Azamgarh and landed in Civil Lines. He said, ‘Since all other officers were already busy, I took an AK-47 and asked the then divisional commissioner to inspect the affected areas. Today I remember roaming in the streets of Azamgarh carrying an AK-47. We conducted continuous raids and registered cases against many people involved in the violence.
Mukhtar Ansari, five-time MLA from Mau Sadar seat, was behind bars since 2005. There were more than 60 criminal cases registered against him. When Mukhtar’s health suddenly deteriorated in the closed jail, he was taken to the hospital, where he died during treatment. On Saturday, he was laid to rest amidst heavy security presence at Mohammadabad Darji Tola in Ghazipur.
