New Delhi. What would you say if the Foreign Minister of the country starts talking about cricket while talking about politics? This is what happened on Wednesday at AnyTV’s Leadership Conclave Rising India Conference 2024 when Indian External Affairs Minister S. To explain his point, Jaishankar remembered a test match that was almost 55 years old. S. Jaishankar said in the Rising India Conference 2024 that he still remembers that century of Ian Chappell.
S. The test match that Jaishankar is talking about was played in Delhi between 28 November and 2 December 1969. Australia batted first in the match. The Australian team under the captaincy of Bill Lawrie was under immense pressure at one time when Ian Chappell, who came to bat at number three, stood firm on the field. He played an innings of 135 runs. During this period, Chappell hit so many fours (21) in an innings that he had never hit more than this, neither before nor later. This innings of Ian Chappell is counted among the best examples of attack-defense.
Sports Minister’s announcement – India is ready to host Olympics, said – If he had not been a leader, he would have been a cricketer…
Australia scored 296 runs in this innings. Out of which 135 runs were in the name of Ian Chappell. India scored 223 runs in reply to Australia’s 296 runs. India then restricted Australia to 107 runs in the second innings and then won the match by scoring 181 runs for 3 wickets. The heroes of this victory of India were Bishan Singh Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna. Both of them took 9-9 wickets in the match. Among the batsmen, Ashok Mankad (97) and Ajit Wadekar (91) played excellent innings.
Foreign Minister S. When Jaishankar was asked at the Rising Bharat Summit 2024 that who inspired him as a diplomat and leader, he also mentioned Ian Chappell’s innings in the example he gave in response. S Jaishankar said, ‘When I reached Russia for the first time, the Foreign Minister there was Andrey Kozyrev. When I first joined the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. You are influenced by different people at different times and by calling someone the best, you prove others inferior. For example, if you are fond of test matches then you remember many great innings. But let me tell you that I remember the innings played by Ian Chappell in Delhi, which I saw as my first century. So you remember a lot of things but I would like to avoid calling any one of these the best.
