Be it calling or sending texts, taking selfies or watching reels, our phones are always with us like a shadow. On average, people spend four to five hours on their phones, without realizing how much harm it is doing to their health. In this article, we will learn how excessive use of this small device can have a negative impact on our overall health.
Problems caused by holding the phone for too long:
Cramping or burning sensation in the thumb or wrist
tingling or numbness in fingers
Fatigue in hands due to scrolling on phone
These problems are:
Text Claw: Constant texting or swiping can cause hands to stiffen.
Trigger thumb: In this condition, the thumb gets stuck in a bent position due to swelling.
Carpal tunnel syndrome: Pressure on the median nerve in the wrist causes numbness or weakness in the thumb and the two adjacent fingers. Studies have shown that holding a smartphone for two hours or more every day increases the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Arthritis: Swelling of the hands or wrists can occur due to wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints. Continued phone use can make these symptoms worse.
Ways to avoid pain:
Switch hands: Instead of constantly holding the phone in the same hand, switch hands from time to time. Hold the phone in one hand and use the fingers of the other hand to scroll.
Have a light grip: Hold the phone with a light grip; Don’t hold too tightly. If you’re watching a video or reading something on your phone, place it on a table or stand instead of holding it in your hand.
Use tools like voice commands: Instead of constantly using your thumb, you can also use tools like voice commands.
Don’t hold the phone between your shoulder and ear: This will put strain on your neck and shoulders. It would be convenient to use earbuds or headset.
Take breaks and stretch: Take breaks every 15-20 minutes while using your phone. Stretch your shoulders and fingers back and forth.
Keep your arms straight: Try to keep your elbows as straight as possible instead of bent, especially when talking on the phone or reading for long periods of time.
