Today’s modern lifestyle has become incredibly convenient. Modern lifestyle has made our lives much easier. Internet, social media, smartphones and online work have empowered us a lot, but this same facility is having a negative impact on our mental health. This modern lifestyle has led to a rapid increase in serious mental illnesses like depression in recent years. Dr Rahul Chandhok, senior consultant and head of the department of psychiatry at Artemis Light NFC Hospital, Gurugram, explains how modern lifestyle is increasing the risk of depression.

Digital media is the biggest factor:
Comparison with others: In modern lifestyle, everyone is pursuing some goal or the other. Some people are making great progress and sharing their achievements on social media. When others see them, it increases the stress. The tendency to compare oneself with others on social media also affects self-esteem and increases stress.

Digital Dependence: Our digital dependence has increased significantly. Smartphones, social media and constant notifications keep our brains constantly active. This reduces the ability to concentrate and the mind does not get time to rest.

Active on social media: Being constantly updated and active on social media has become a part of modern lifestyle. The habit of always being online does not allow the mind to rest. This increases mental fatigue and stress.

These other factors also contribute to depression:
Lack of sleep: In modern lifestyle, we often work or use mobile phones till late night. When the body does not get enough sleep, it leads to hormonal imbalance, leading to mood swings, irritability and anxiety.

Bad eating habits: In modern lifestyle, we often consume excessive junk food and caffeine, which increases the level of stress hormones in the body. Plus, everything is just a few steps away, reducing our physical activity. When we are less physically active, our happiness hormones decrease, leading to worse mood. This can cause diseases like depression.

Social Isolation: Distance and social isolation in relationships are also a major reason. Nowadays, people are digitally connected, but emotionally isolated more than ever. Loneliness gradually increases mental stress.

How to avoid depression?
To avoid depression, small changes in your lifestyle are necessary. Maintain good eating habits. Good eating habits also affect our health. Exercise regularly. Walk for at least half an hour daily. Get enough sleep, at least 8 to 9 hours. Most importantly, incorporate a digital detox into your lifestyle.
