Despite all the laws for the protection of women, especially the strict Domestic Violence Act- 2005, one out of every three women in the country is a victim of domestic violence. Most of the cases of such violence at home go unreported. The reason for this is that the woman is financially dependent on her husband or family. At the same time, ignorance about domestic violence cases is also a big reason for this.
This has come to the fore in the VidhiSpeaks survey, in which data from ‘NCRB’ and ‘National Family Health Report’ have been made the basis. The reason for this is also one of the reasons for not getting punishment in crimes related to women. Expert in criminal law Dr. H.P. Sharma says that most of the cases of domestic violence go unreported.
Only those cases of this violence are reported, in which the violence is of a serious nature. Domestic violence is domestic violence, but it is not reported. Such cases come to the fore in metro cities but such cases are not reported from smaller cities, towns and villages. He said that it has also been observed that women do not report the crime despite being aware of the law and knowing that she is being harassed.
This mostly happens in cases where the woman is financially dependent on the husband or family. The attitude of other societies is also an important factor. A woman who goes to the police with the complaint of her husband or family is not seen with good eyes in the society. If she still complains, she gets no support and is left alone. After that he has no way but to compromise.
The punishment rate for crimes against women is just 23.7%. At the same time, the percentage of pendency of such cases is 91.2. The reason for this is the lack of special courts, laxity in police investigation, non-appearance of witnesses, negative attitude of the society and the absence of courts.
