The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s new ‘Global Education Report’ states that boys are more likely than girls to re-read primary classes in 130 countries. The report titled ‘Leave No Child Behind: Global Report on Boys’ Disengagement from Education’ states that around 1.32 million boys of primary and secondary school age are out of school.
According to the report, boys are more prone than girls to be physically harassed. It said that in 130 countries, boys are more likely than girls to re-educate in primary classes, and these figures point to their poorer rate of progress in school. The report said that according to data from 57 countries, boys aged 10 years lag far behind girls in terms of reading ability. Adolescent boys are lagging behind girls at the secondary level. “Girls are more likely to never go to school, but in many countries boys are at higher risk of not attending further classes and completing their education,” it said. At present, 1.32 million boys are not going to school.” The report cited stringent discipline, corporal punishment, gender norms, poverty and the need to work as the reasons behind such alienation of boys from education.
