Bengaluru: The body of a woman who went missing due to a landslide in Shirur village of Uttara Kannada district was recovered from the Gangavali river during a search operation on Tuesday. With this, the death toll in the incident has risen to eight. Police gave this information. According to officials, the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services and Navy are continuing the search operation at the site of the incident and in the Gangavali river.

Superintendent of Police (Karwar) Narayan M. told PTI, “During the search operation, we found another body which was of a 65-year-old woman. The decomposed body was recovered from the Gangavali river. The search operation is on to find three more people, including the truck driver (Arjun) from Kerala.”

The Indian Army Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief team comprised one officer, two Junior Commissioned Officers and 55 others from Maratha Light Infantry Regiment Belgaum and one Junior Commissioned Officer and two other officers from College of Military Engineering, Pune.

Officials said the army team has provided rescue equipment including ground penetration radar, deep search metal detector, raft with overboard motor and special climbing equipment to the area. According to satellite images obtained by the Indian Space Research Organisation on July 16, the day of the massive landslide, a truck is suspected to have fallen into the river.

The army team is conducting the operation with ‘Pharex Locator’ – GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar). It is a special device for detecting metals under water and in soil. Vehicle movement on National Highway 66 has been stopped after the landslide.
