New York. American assistant trade representative Brendon Lynch is on a tour of New Delhi amid a dispute over the tariff. Lynch’s visit is taking place at a time when positive messages of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have increased hopes of trade agreement after several days of sharp deadlock.
During this period, a statement of Trump’s senior business advisor Peter Navaro, who was strict opponent of India, has come out. He said that India is coming to the conversation table. However, he indicated that oil procurement from Russia is affecting the trade relations between the US and India.
In the CNBC program squalk box, he said, “India is coming to the conversation table.”
Navaro said, “The Prime Minister of India posted a very cordial, good and creative post and President Trump reacted to him, but it seems that he has misunderstood the order.”
Trump said in a post on Truth Social on 9 September that talks between the two countries are going on and I am confident that there will be no difficulty for both great countries to reach a successful conclusion. Describing Prime Minister Modi as his ‘great friend’, he said that he would talk to him.
Reacting to Trump’s post about 17 hours later, Prime Minister Modi said, “I am confident that our trade talks will pave the way to highlight the immense possibilities of Indo-US partnership.” He further said that he was eager to talk to Trump.
Navaro also reiterated the complaint of the highest tariff on New Delhi, while the interviewer made fun of Navaro’s remarks in which he described India as ‘Maharaja of Tariff’.
Navaro said, “His tariffs are the highest than any big country. We had to deal with it as we are dealing with every other country, which does so.”
He claimed that this issue is the issue of India to buy Russian oil, which was not before the Ukraine struggle. Soon after the war, Indian refiners joined with Russian refiners and are acting as ‘bandits’.
Navaro claimed that India’s purchasing oil from Russia would eventually harm American taxpayers, as Ukraine has to pay to give weapons when Moscow uses revenue from India to buy weapons.
Navaro said that he feels that Prime Minister Modi felt uncomfortable while meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin last month.
He said, “It was an interesting experience to see Prime Minister Modi on a platform with the Chinese President and Russian counterpart Putin, who has been a threat to India for a long time. I don’t think PM Modi was feeling comfortable.”
Earlier, angry President Donald Trump had decided to impose a 25 percent penalty tariff on India. Trump made a sudden reconciliation statement after imposing 50 percent tariffs on India and calling India’s economy ‘dead’.
He admitted in an interview on Fox News last week that this fee creates a rift with India and it is not easy to implement it.
