Pink city remains in the grip of blackout, mercury dropped by 10 degrees, broken wires took the life of a young man in Jaisinghpura Khor.
Jaipur. Saturday was like a nightmare in the capital Jaipur. While on one hand the monstrous form of nature provided relief from the scorching heat, on the other hand it left such a scene of devastation that the pace of the city came to a halt. The storm that came at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour and the rain that followed exposed the infrastructure of Jaipur. Amidst this natural disaster, a young man died tragically after getting hit by electric wires in Jaisinghpura Khor area. This incident has raised serious questions on the preparedness of the administration and the vigilance of the electricity department.
Major events: When destruction rained from the sky
The weather was harsh since Saturday morning, but the storm that came around 8 pm disturbed everything. According to the weather station, the wind speed had reached 80 km/h, which was more lethal than normal.
Drop in temperature: Due to thunderstorm and light drizzle, the mercury dropped by 8 degrees to 10 degrees by 9 pm, due to which the weather suddenly became cold.
Urban infrastructure: Huge hoardings installed in major markets of the city collapsed like a deck of cards. Water tanks flew down from the roofs of many houses, causing chaos.
Accident report: ‘blink’ of death and system lapse
The most heartbreaking incident happened in Jaisinghpura Khor area. Here a young man named Yunus, a resident of Kho Nagoriyan, got hit by the broken electric wires due to the storm.
Local police officers (SHO Mukesh Kumar and ASI Ratan Lal) tried their best to save the youth by giving CPR (life saving techniques) on the spot, but the electric shock was so strong that the youth could not be saved. After this incident, there is huge anger among the local people against the electricity department. People allege that despite giving information, the power supply was not disconnected on time.
Blackout: The capital remained immersed in darkness.
Due to the storm, hundreds of electric poles and trees in the city were uprooted, due to which dozens of feeders came to a standstill. There was power failure for several hours in areas like Mansarovar, Sanganer, Jhotwara and Parkota. Electricity department teams were busy repairing the fault throughout the night, but in many areas the situation of ‘blackout’ continued till morning.
Action of police and administration: Police have sent the body of the deceased youth for post-mortem and have started investigation into the alleged negligence of the electricity department. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of similar fluctuating weather for the coming few days.
