A very sad and heartbreaking news has come out from Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. A laborer was buried alive and died while repairing a sewer line on the city’s railway road. While working in a 20-foot-deep pit, a huge piece of soil—or mound—suddenly fell on top of the worker, leaving him no chance to react or save himself. A video of this entire incident is currently going viral on social media—the footage is so shocking that it will shock anyone’s heart.
How did this accident happen?
This area was facing the problem of waterlogging for the last two days. A team of the Water Department was repairing a clogged sewer line. During the digging process, a water pipeline was also damaged, further complicating the situation. The worker had landed in the pit, which was about 20 feet deep. While he was working on connecting the sewer line, a heavy layer of soil suddenly broke and fell on him. Eyewitnesses and local residents allege that, despite the need to work in such deep excavations, no concrete safety measures were taken.
Rescue operation and chaos
As soon as the mud fell, there was chaos at the spot. Other workers working with the victim tried their best to pull their comrade out, but were helpless against the enormous weight of the debris—which was several tons. As soon as the information was received, a JCB machine was called and the work of removing soil was started. By the time the worker was finally pulled out after a lot of effort, he had died of suffocation due to the immense pressure of the soil. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A local resident commented, “Sending a worker down such a deep ditch without any ‘shoring’—that is, structural support to prevent soil from falling out—is like taking a reckless gamble with his life.”
administrative action
After this incident, there is huge anger among the local residents towards the department. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Municipal Commissioner has sought a detailed report on the entire incident. It has also been assured that government assistance will be provided to the victim’s family. The department’s security standards are currently under intense scrutiny. This incident reminds us of the harsh reality that amidst the hustle and bustle of development projects, the safety of workers—who risk their lives to make our cities livable—is often ignored. If safety equipment had been used on time, today this worker would have been with his family.
