Kolkata, June 18 (IANS). Police have arrested seven more people in connection with an attempt to rescue TMC leader Jahangir Khan by raiding Falta police station in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This incident was allegedly led by Jahangir Khan’s wife Regina Bibi, who is currently absconding.
After these seven new arrests made by the Diamond Harbor District Police, the total number of accused arrested in this case has increased to 15. Before this, eight other accused have been arrested in the last two days.
According to police sources, now additional sections of Arms Act, 1959 and Explosives Act, 1884 have also been added against absconding Regina Bibi. Police allege that she was the main person behind the attack on Falta police station and the entire conspiracy to free Jahangir Khan.
It was told that on June 16, a crowd of Trinamool supporters led by Regina Bibi had entered the Falta police station and tried to free Jahangir Khan. However, the state police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel present at the spot dispersed the crowd by lathicharge and foiled their attempt.
Police investigation and interrogation of the arrested accused have revealed that the attack was planned a day earlier on Monday at a secret location. According to the police, this meeting was presided over by Regina Bibi.
According to a district police officer, it was decided in the meeting that the supporters would gather at a place about three kilometers away from the Falta police station and from there, Jahangir Khan would be rescued by suddenly attacking the police station in an organized manner.
Jahangir Khan, who was the Trinamool Congress candidate from Falta seat in the recently concluded assembly elections, has been considered a very influential leader in the area for a long time.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached Falta and while addressing a public program, directed the Diamond Harbor District Police to take strict action under the Indian Justice Code (BNS) against those who attacked the Falta police station.
The Chief Minister also directed the police to seize the properties of the attackers and later start the process of auctioning them.
