Guwahati, June 12 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday paid tribute to famous Assamese folk singer Khagen Mahanta on his death anniversary. Also remembered his important contribution in preserving and popularizing the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
In a post on social media platform
Chief Minister Sarma wrote, “Today we pay tribute to the ‘King of Bihu’ Khagen Mahanta on his death anniversary. A master of Assamese folk music, his voice did not just sing, but also kept the cultural heartbeat of Assam alive and brought the vibrant spirit of Bihu to the world stage. His art will continue to inspire generations, ensuring that his tune never fades from our hearts. Tribute to this immortal artist.”
Khagen Mahanta is one of the most celebrated figures in the history of Assamese music. Mahanta, widely respected for his soulful singing of traditional Bihu songs, played an important role in taking the folk traditions of Assam beyond regional boundaries and bringing them to audiences across India and abroad.
Born in Assam, Mahanta devoted his life to promoting local music and culture.
Due to his special singing style and deep understanding of folk traditions, he became the cultural ambassador of the state. His songs, many of which are still played at Bihu festivals and cultural events, are considered evergreen classics.
Mahanta received much recognition and many honors for his contribution to Assamese music over several decades. His work helped save many traditional musical styles and inspired countless singers and composers.
