New Delhi, July 16 (IANS). Delhi’s Patiala House Court has allowed Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Shaikh alias Rashid Engineer to attend the upcoming monsoon session from July 20 to August 13, while in police custody.
This hearing was held in-camera in the court at Patiala House. Abdul Rashid Sheikh is in judicial custody in a terrorist funding case.
Jailed Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid had earlier announced on June 21 that he would resign from the Lok Sabha as he was unable to handle the functioning of his constituency. However, his Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) said it would consult the public before taking a final decision on the issue.
AIP decided to seek the opinion of its grassroots workers on Engineer Rashid’s intention to resign from the Lok Sabha. Engineer Rashid said that they are not able to effectively reach out and serve the people who have elected them with an overwhelming majority.
According to a statement issued by AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi, the party’s political affairs committee held detailed deliberations on the issue and resolved to launch a comprehensive consultation process involving party officials and workers in all the 18 assembly constituencies of Baramulla parliamentary constituency. After carefully examining all aspects of the case, the Political Affairs Committee decided that party officials at various levels would participate in a two-day consultation session to consider whether Engineer Rashid should continue as MP or step down.
Engineer Rashid is currently lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail as an accused in a money laundering case related to terror-funding.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Engineer Rashid had defeated National Conference (NC) vice president and sitting chief minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla constituency by a margin of over 2 lakh votes.
