Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a group of people in Sonarpur South, West Bengal on Saturday. He was on his way to meet families affected by the post-poll violence when some unidentified people threw stones, eggs and shoes at him. This incident occurred in South 24 Parganas district. Abhishek has held BJP responsible for this attack. Opposition parties have also reacted to the incident; The Congress party said the government must ensure the safety of opposition leaders, and stressed that political differences can never justify violence. Apart from this, Akhilesh Yadav has also reacted on this matter.

Meanwhile, according to eyewitnesses, a group of unidentified people started shouting “Thief! Thief!” They raised slogans, threw deadly objects at the TMC MP and tried to physically attack him. Police have confirmed the incident, although no arrests have been made so far. Following the attack, opposition leaders across the country have targeted both the BJP government of West Bengal and the central government.

Following the attack, TMC issued a statement saying, “Even after this deadly attack by BJP-backed goons, our National General Secretary did not back down. Instead, he stood strong with the family who is heartbroken by the unimaginable trauma inflicted by the alleged BJP-backed goons.”
