Nitish Kumar is the longest serving Chief Minister of Bihar. Kumar’s political life has been full of ups and downs. He entered politics as a member of the Janata Dal and became an MLA in 1985.
After this, Kumar and George Fernandes formed Samata Party in 1994. In 1996 he was elected to the Lok Sabha and served as a Union Minister in the Vajpayee government. In 2005, the NDA won majority in the Bihar Assembly and Kumar became the Chief Minister, leading a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In the 2010 state elections, the ruling coalition took power with an overwhelming majority. In June 2013, Kumar broke away from the BJP and formed an alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress. In 2014, he was replaced by Jitan Ram Manjhi, but he again became the Chief Minister in 2015 and led the Grand Alliance to victory in the same year. In 2017, Kumar returned to the NDA after breaking away from the RJD and led another alliance with the BJP in the 2020 state elections.
In August 2022, Kumar left the NDA and rejoined the grand alliance. In January 2024, Kumar once again left the Grand Alliance and rejoined the NDA. In 2025, he won his fifth election with an overwhelming majority and was sworn in as Chief Minister for the tenth time.
Kumar’s return to national politics could pave the way for the BJP to gain more clout in the government in Bihar and possibly even lay claim to the chief minister’s chair.
