Budget session resumes: Jaishankar will give statement on West Asia, preparation for no-confidence motion against the Speaker

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to make a statement in the Lok Sabha regarding the “situation in West Asia” as the second phase of the budget session of Parliament begins on Monday.

The statement comes amid growing international attention on the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has arisen following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint military strikes on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28.

In retaliation, Tehran launched retaliatory attacks targeting US military bases in several West Asian countries and Israeli assets throughout the region.

S Jaishankar will make a statement in the House, while opposition MPs have demanded a discussion on the current conflict. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has criticized the Center for setting time for the statement and demanded an opportunity to ask questions.

Meanwhile, according to the agenda, Congress MPs are likely to bring a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. 118 opposition MPs have signed the resolution, which alleges “partisan” behavior by the Speaker after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House.

If the permission of the House is obtained, this proposal will be introduced.

Proceedings of Budget Session 2026 in the House Meghalaya MP Ricky Andrew J. Singcon will resume paying tribute to his demise. He was a current member of the House. The House will also pay tribute to the demise of Kumari Sushila Tririya, Devi Bux Singh, Purnimaasi Ram and KP Unnikrishnan.

The Rajya Sabha session will resume after paying tribute to the demise of Mukul Roy, Janardan Waghmare and HK Dua.

In the Upper House, Union Minister Nityanand Rai will table a copy of the proclamation issued by the President on February 4 under clause (2) of Article 356 of the Constitution, repealing the proclamation issued by him on February 13, 2025, which imposed President’s rule in Manipur from February 4.

The functioning of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change is also likely to be discussed in the Rajya Sabha.

The second phase of the budget session is scheduled to run till April 2, during which mainly essential legislative business and discussion on the Union Budget 2026-27 are expected to take place.

The session, which began with the President’s address to the joint sitting of both Houses on January 28, will continue till April 2 with 30 sittings in 65 days.
