New Delhi, July 1 (IANS). The tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has been extended by one year beyond the scheduled time. This information was given on Wednesday.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of tenure of 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vikram Misri by one year. His current tenure was to end on July 14, 2026, but now he will continue on this post till further orders.
This order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions implements the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(D).
Vikram Misri is an experienced diplomat and has handled many important bilateral and international responsibilities for India. Since becoming the Foreign Secretary in the year 2024, he has played a major role in giving direction to India’s foreign policy.
His tenure has come at a time when many major changes are taking place in the world, such as tensions in West Asia and Ukraine, the changing situation in the Indo-Pacific region, India’s growing role in the Global South and important issues with neighboring countries like China, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
According to sources, the decision to extend this tenure has been taken in view of the government’s confidence in Misri’s leadership and the need to maintain continuity in India’s foreign policy.
Misri has also worked in Pakistan, Europe and America. He has also been India’s Ambassador to Myanmar and China. He has played an important role in strengthening India’s strategic relations with America, Quad countries and European countries.
Their role has also been considered very important in times of crisis, such as evacuating Indian citizens from conflict areas and increasing important cooperation in the field of defense and technology.
This decision has come at a time when India is preparing for several major diplomatic events, including events related to the current chairmanship of BRICS, possible steps related to G20 and several important bilateral meetings.
This is not the first time that the tenure of a senior officer has been extended during the current government. Efforts have often been made to retain experienced officials in key positions who have long-term experience and institutional understanding.
