China's claim of mediation is worrying, government should provide clarity: Congress claims

Congress claimed on Wednesday that China’s claim regarding mediation between India and Pakistan is worrying and hence there should be clarity at the government level.

Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X, ‘President Donald Trump has long claimed that he personally intervened to stop Operation Vermillion on May 10, 2025. He has made this claim at least 65 times in seven different countries, on different platforms. He also said that till date Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not broken his silence on these claims made by his so-called good friend.

Ramesh says, ‘Now China’s Foreign Minister is also making the same claim and saying that China had also mediated. On July 4, 2025, Deputy Army Chief Lieutenant General Rahul Singh had publicly said that during Operation Sindoor, India was actually confronting and fighting China.

According to the Congress leader, China stood decisively with Pakistan, hence China’s claims of mediating between India and Pakistan are worrying. He said that this is worrying not only because it is contrary to what the people of the country have been told till now, but also because it seems to make a mockery of our national security.

Ramesh said, ‘This claim should also be understood in the context of our relations with China. We have again started talks with China, but unfortunately these talks are taking place on China’s terms. The clean chit given by the Prime Minister to China on 19 June 2020 has significantly weakened India’s negotiating position. Our trade deficit is at record levels and a large part of our exports are dependent on imports from China. China’s provocative actions regarding Arunachal Pradesh continue. ‘ He said that amidst such one-sided and hostile relations, the people of India need clarity as to what role China played in suddenly stopping Operation Sindoor.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had said on Tuesday that tensions between India and Pakistan were among the major issues that were resolved through China’s mediation.

India says that the May 7-10 conflict between India and Pakistan was resolved through direct talks between the DGMOs (Directors General of Military Operations) of the armies of the two countries. India has also consistently maintained that there is no room for interference by any third party in matters related to India and Pakistan.
