Agartala, June 15 (IANS). Questions have started being raised in political and social circles regarding the mysterious death of a 24-year-old girl working in a private medical college in Tripura. The state’s main opposition party CPI (M) has demanded a SIT investigation into the matter.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and CPI (M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhary reached the victim’s house on Sunday and met the family. Many senior party leaders and State Secretary of Youth Organization Nabarun Deb were also present with him.
After talking to family members and local people, Chaudhary claimed that the girl’s death could not be a suicide but a case of murder. He raised the question that how can the police reach any conclusion before the post mortem report comes. He said that unless there is a SIT or a judicial inquiry, the truth of the incident will not be revealed.
Jitendra Chaudhary alleged that before the incident, the girl’s mother had asked him to come home, but the medical college administration did not allow him to go home for three days. They also claimed that the young woman was recently transferred to another department and was made to work in night shifts against her will.
This private medical college is located in the Madhuban area of West Tripura district and is run by a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Birbhum, West Bengal.
The CPI(M) leader said the victim’s family and local people were not satisfied with the progress of the police investigation. Criticizing the investigating officers, he alleged that the concerned SDPO had made public statements terming it as a love affair even before the entire investigation was completed.
Meanwhile, the Home Department of the Tripura government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter on June 11. According to the order issued by Additional Secretary Tarit Kanti Chakma, West Tripura District Magistrate and Collector Dr. Vishal Kumar has been entrusted with the responsibility of investigation. They will have to investigate all aspects of the incident and submit a detailed report to the Home Department within 15 days.
According to the information, the girl was earlier working as a caretaker in the medical college and was recently posted in the examination cell. His body was recovered from the college campus on the night of 10 June.
After the incident, the police started investigation and the next day in the presence of family members and college administration, the body was sent to Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital for post-mortem. A youth has also been arrested in the case.
The family members have expressed suspicion of murder of the girl and demanded a fair, transparent and thorough investigation. Some local people have also expressed fear of sexual harassment before death.
