The new Chief Minister of Kerala, V.D. Satheesan took oath as the Chief Minister on Monday (May 18). Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also present in this ceremony. The UDF government took several major decisions during its first cabinet meeting. Satishan has given an important gift to the people; He announced free travel in KSRTC buses for women and creation of a special section for the elderly. Apart from this, many other important decisions were also taken.
Announcing the decisions taken in the first cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said complete details about the free bus travel scheme for women would be released later. The Cabinet also decided to create a separate section for the elderly – an initiative the Chief Minister described as the first of its kind in the country.
What did Satheesan say about his decisions?
He said, “The identity of any society is how it treats its elders. By ensuring care of the elderly with dignity, Kerala should emerge as an ideal society.” He further said that in order to fulfill the promise made to Asha workers during their prolonged protest in front of the Secretariat, the Cabinet has approved an increase in their honorarium by ₹3,000 per month.

Satheesan also announced an increase of ₹1,000 per month in the honorarium of Anganwadi workers and helpers, school kitchen staff, pre-primary teachers and *aya* (baby sitters/nannies).
